The music of Vancouver-based Scott Morgan, released under the name Loscil, is all-too-often described as “ambient”. In fact, it’s much more, in ways both subtle and profound. Emotionally engaging, there can be elements of dub, post-rock, even minimalist composition. His most recent album, the excellent Monument Builders, distills the essence of Philip Glass’ music into something uniquely moving. All of Morgan’s work has a fluid, organic feel, with sounds ebbing and flowing like the tide. Here are five of my favorite Loscil albums, in no particular order.
